I love playing in the pool, but I was always very afraid of deep water. If I couldn’t touch the floor, it would petrify me, and I would panic.
To get past this fear, my mum helped me to regulate my emotions and taught me how to do it myself.
I still remember the first time I used it as the fear tried to take hold of me. I was at the pool with my brother and I really wanted to go to the place in the water where I couldn’t touch the bottom of the pool. Nervously, I went to the edge of the pool where it was deepest at 2 metres.
I closed my eyes, put my hands where I felt something was happening in my body, then I followed the sensations that were happening until it all calmed down. When I opened my eyes again, I looked down at the deep water and I just wasn’t scared anymore!
I jumped right in. I’ve never been afraid of deep water again.
I’m now training to dive headfirst and without plugging my nose. I managed to go from being scared of deep water to now loving every opportunity to jump in!
Just getting over my fear of deep water, has helped me everywhere. I now use the emotional regulation technique whenever I get afraid, angry or sad. Just
